If you’re familiar with my reviews, you know they’re usually book reviews. (I like to read. And learn. And share.) However, after checking out this course from a local radio broadcaster, Jodie Stevens, I wanted to bring you a review of one of her virtual courses entitled
“You Are More – Discover Your God Given Identity.”

Stevens is a former radio personality and program director for, “The FISH,” a Christian music radio station in Sacramento, California. She’s also a dynamic public speaker, blogger, and course instructor. Inspired by her own life struggles, and the journeys she’s walked with others, Stevens put together a 5-week course to help participants with that ever-plaguing question of “Who Am I?”

Stevens integrates Christian beliefs with psychological research and practices in what could be described as a blending of covenant-theology and attachment-based theoretical orientation. That’s a fancy way of saying she looks at what the factors are that form our identity and how we can easily get caught up in living outside of what God intended our true identity to be – which is in Him!

Her course covers a variety of topics and offers many different resources to help you work through your thoughts and feelings. She provides over three hours of short video and 18 printable handouts and journal exercises. She also provides a list of resources and book recommendations for further learning. However you best engage with a course – video, reading, or journaling, this course has you covered!

This is a deeply personal look at Jodie’s own life where she talks about her own struggles with addiction, the death of her brother, and how her family of origin created some rather unhealthy dynamics. These unhealthy dynamics later put her on a path to struggle with approval from others and how she still works daily to keep herself in Christ and not to be a people pleaser.

I’d like to say we are very complex creatures and this is a great way to explore some of the many factors that help form our identity. If we understand our identity and “Who We Are,” then we are better able to navigate our lives and our relationship with other people, places, and things. For many of us we base who we are by our successes or failures, or what we do, or what we think others think of us rather than finding our identity in Christ. This also leads to how we feel God sees us. This is why finding your identity in Christ, can for many be hard for those who see God as a God of law rather than grace.

Her course provides a  great overview on how our identity is formed and – as Christians – why it’s so important to understand what and where our true identity should come from. Our identities impact how we view ourselves, others, and the world. There are many things that we allow to impact our identities. Stevens brings it back to the one source of identity for Christians – who God says you are and our identities in His Son, Jesus.
