It seems that our world is changing at a breathtaking pace these days and raising a family is more complex than ever.

The uncertainties in today’s families seem endless. Issues related to things like blended families, working parents, and the pressures of our hurried paced world can leave family members feeling left out, overlooked and misunderstood. Furthermore, children are now influenced in ways their parents could not have imagined when they were growing up. At times, making it hard to find balance or define what is normal.

Families and their associated relationships aren’t lived in a vacuum. There are many facets that make up the family system people live in today. Family counseling looks at that system rather than just the problem.  If a family member is having behavior or developmental concerns, family therapy can focus on the patterns within the family that maybe compounding them. By understanding the effects on the family unit, as a whole, the family members can become more supportive in finding solutions, work more proactively and be more productive in healing the overall family concerns.

Family counseling promotes understanding and collaboration between members in order to address problems of one or more members. Family therapy covers many issues including navigating the complexities of blended families, coping with aging parents, developing effective co-parenting approaches, launching adult children, transitioning family members through normal developmental stages, processing loss and grief, reorganizing member’s roles after a health crisis or disability and enforcing boundaries related to addictions.

Goals of family counseling include establishing realistic expectations, recognizing unique challenges, determining acceptable behavior, encouraging family member accountability, navigating differences, establishing common goals, and measurable outcomes. In addition, family counseling seeks to foster each individual personal growth and empowerment.

If you or your family is struggling, I’d like to help. As with most therapy, the sooner you start the sooner the mending can begin.

Common issues people seek family counseling for include:
